The Public Administration Committee (PAC)

The Public Administration Committee (PAC) is the UK’s leading learned society for developing education and research in public administration and represents the subject internationally. The PAC is very active in the promotion of public administration, public policy and the study of governance, both through scholarly activities and as the representative organisation for those universities in which teaching and research in such subjects are undertaken. It does so through various activities, including an annual conference; research seminars; the publication of research work; and advising government, Parliament and other public bodies.

Conference and Workshops

The PAC annual organises the country’s major subject conference. The Frank Stacey Memorial Lecture opens each conference and is delivered by a distinguished academic or senior civil servant. Research seminars to explore and disseminate current work are held each year and training workshops are organised to improve teaching content and methods.

Journals

The PAC publishes two highly respected journals in its field. Public Policy and Administration includes papers by leading civil servants as well as academics. It is published quarterly and subscribed to internationally. Teaching Public Administration is aimed specifically at teachers, providing up-to-date briefings on current events and discussing innovations in teaching methods (twice a year). International Relations The PAC acts as the British Section of the International Institute of Administrative Science (IIAS), and chairs the United Kingdom Public Administration Consortium (UKPAC) which funds UK membership.

Publicity and Co-operation

The PAC works with other organisations to develop and publicise the subject widely, for instance jointly sponsoring workshops with the Political Studies Association, previous connections with the Civil Service College and the National School of Government, and linking with the Chartered Institute of Public Finance and Accountancy (CIPFA), which currently sponsors several PAC events, including the annual conference. The PAC regularly publishes and distributes careers leaflets promoting its subject areas to potential graduates and undergraduates.
